The Polar M400 has a very favorable price for a GPS sports watch. Nevertheless, it is a full-fledged GPS sports watch that uses GPS to accurately track the distance covered. The pulse is measured accurately and reliably via a chest strap (this is either included or must be purchased). It is especially well suited as a running clock, can also be used as an activity tracker in everyday life and displays smartphone notifications.

Budget-conscious athletes looking for a low-cost, reliable fitness watch for their workout and everyday life will find what they’re looking for with the Polar M400.

polar m400 test:

The Polar M400 is a reasonably priced GPS sports watch with a high functionality. It is particularly well suited for running activities and can also be used for swimming or cycling. In other sports than running, however, he does not have the special features on it like other GPS sports watches.
The battery of the M400 convinces with simple charging and long running time. Thus, the Polar M400 can also be used as a good fitness tracker in everyday life, but it looks sportier and a little more conspicuous than smaller fitness bracelets. Weight and size, however, are so small that in terms of comfort nothing speaks against a permanent use.
Small weaknesses such as the lack of a stopwatch, a vibrating alarm or a barometer fall in particular in view of the low price and the other strengths hardly significant.

Polar M400

polar app

In the category “application and handling” the Polar M400 performs well. Especially the battery and the water resistance are positive, and the display, operation and wearing comfort are also neat.

Comfortable to wear

The Polar M400 weighs about 56 grams. This makes it significantly more difficult than the roughly comparable GPS sports watch Garmin Sports vivo active, which weighs 38 grams – but still significantly lighter than the Polar V800 . The comfort is good, nothing pushes or pinches. The material of the watch (silicone) is soft and cuddly but attracts light lint. There is nothing wrong with the processing.

Thanks to a pin buckle holds the fitness watch safely on the arm. Unfortunately, the bracelet is not changeable.

Positive is the thickness of the Polar M400: The clock is 11.5 mm quite thin for a GPS sports watch (although not as thin as the Garmin vivoactive).

Heart rate measurement via chest strap

The Polar M400 has no heart rate sensor on the wrist – the heart rate is measured using a chest strap. The accuracy of the pulse measurement is very good and is in no way inferior to other, more expensive watches. The chest strap is connected via Bluetooth (the energy-saving variant “Bluetooth Smart”) with the GPS sports watch, the connection is reliable.

On the display, you can display the exact heart rate, or – the clearer version – represent heart rate zones. These zones can be set via the app.

Various breast straps (as well as other running sensors) can be connected to the Polar M400 via Bluetooth Smart. The M400 is available with or without chest strap. If you buy the bundle, you save depending on the offer around 10 to 20 euros compared to a single purchase. The included in the bundle chest strap Polar H7 Smart heart rate sensor is not the smallest on the market – but it serves its purpose very well.

Under water, the heart rate measurement works – unlike the “big brother”, the Polar V800 unfortunately not.

Smartwatch functions: extensive “Smart Notifications”

Polar calls it “Smart Notifications”: the M400 shows you when you receive calls (including the caller’s name) when you receive push notifications from apps or when messages arrive. Messages are not displayed (unlike, for example, in the Garmin vivosmart HR ), but only the first words. In the app, you can also issue this or define what you want to be notified about. In my opinion, this is a handy feature because you do not always have to take your smartphone out of your pocket.

As with a smartwatch, Bluetooth must be enabled on the smartphone to display the phone features. You can individually set which “notifications” you would like to receive and which not, separately for training and everyday life.

control via Polar Flow App & Flow web service

Polar offers an app for your smartphone and at the same time also the so-called web service. The web service is more than the app in large, you can make more settings there (eg sports profiles) and perform more detailed evaluations. Good is also the possibility to export training data, eg in table format csv. Based on these analysis options you can see that Polar really has many years of experience in running watches and running data analysis.

Update - 2018.10.06The clarity of the app is good, the web service is very good.

The GPS sports watch Polar M400 comes in exactly five out of five possible points in the FITNESS-UHR.net test. It performs equally well in all three categories: Both handling and application, as well as the functionality and the app, can convince. Although there is still room for improvement in all cases, our judgment is nevertheless:

The Polar M400 is well suited as a running watch and GPS sports watch and is also (if you like the sporty design) a helpful daily companion for recording your activity level.
The Polar M400 may not be the best GPS sports watch, let alone the one with the most features. But for the price he is unreservedly recommended
