Wearables have been an important topic in the technology world for some time now. Above all, fitness watches can collect more data than the smartphone, because they lie directly on the wrist and the built-in sensors values can record much better than a smartphone in the pocket or jacket pocket could. Smartwatches and fitness watches have even become so important that almost every one of the world’s largest technology companies has launched their own product in this segment. But today we are not looking at a smartwatch from Apple or Samsung, but the Garmin Fenix 5.
Great influence, of course, has the first impression. And this is absolutely outstanding in the Fenix 5. In terms of design, the fitness watch impresses with its simple, but no less noble exterior. But even for those who like it a bit more conspicuous, there are suitable options. The bracelet can be chosen in plain white or black, but also in pink, turquoise or yellow. The yellow is already in the direction of neon green. Especially in the color black, she likes us extremely well, because you can wear them in virtually every situation and every occasion.
However, the Smartwatch convinces not only by its appearance but also by its functionality. The centerpiece is a chroma color display, which allows the display to be read at almost any brightness. Another big plus is the optical heart rate sensor directly on the wrist. The battery life varies depending on the selected mode. Namely, the Fenix 5 can be used as a fitness tracker, navigation device or smartwatch. According to the manufacturer, it holds up to 24 in GPS mode, up to 60 hours in UltraTrac mode and even 2 weeks in smartwatch mode. Meanwhile, the standard is also the water resistance, which is of course also on the Fenix 5 on board. This is 10 ATM, which corresponds to the test pressure in 100m water depth.
Most of them will be interested in the Fenix 5, above all because of their numerous sports functions. So there is a high number of sports that can be tracked with the fitness watch from Garmin. These include running, swimming, triathlon, cycling, golf, rowing, skiing/ snowboarding/cross-country skiing, mountaineering, hiking, trail running and SUP. Depending on which sport you choose, the timepiece will display various of the recorded data to keep you up-to-date on the latest status, achievements and upcoming goals. And even if it is less sporty and you just want to track the normal activities of everyday life, the clock provides accurate information about steps, calorie consumption and distances. In addition, a heart rate measurement 24 hours a day is possible. It should be noted, however, that the clock must be close to the wrist for exact measurements of the sensor.
But now a few words about the Smartwatch functions. In order for the Fenix 5 to always be able to display news directly on the wrist, a pairing with the smartphone via Bluetooth is of course necessary. However, this requires the Garmin Connect app. This makes it possible to see emails, messages and calls directly with a quick glance at the clock. In terms of operating system of the smartphone, iOS 8.0, Android 4.3, Bluetooth 4.0 and Windows 10 Phone are the minimum requirements. This means that newer versions of the respective software will of course also allow the smartphone to be connected to the Garmin Fenix 5.
But even as a navigation device, the Fenix 5 is ideal. Many know the problem: You are in a new city or on the way to a previously unknown place. To help you use the smartphone for navigation. Apart from the fact that it is extremely impractical to have to hold the device constantly in your hand or to get out of your pocket every few minutes, one has to do better in new places than to constantly focus on the display. Especially on vacation, you would rather look at the environment and not the electronic card. Of course, the fenix 5 cannot fully solve this problem, but at least it saves you from having to unplug and re-insert your smartphone. A quick look at the wrist is enough and you know again in which direction you have to orient yourself. The Fenix 5 scores point with a really exceptionally accurate satellite acquisition. The movement data is recorded by the watch and then displayed graphically.
you are always well informed about the current altitude. The movement data is recorded by the watch and then displayed graphically. In addition, the TracBack function allows you to return to the starting point at any time. This can be really helpful, for example, on vacation when exploring a new city or trying out a new training track. You do not have to worry about where you’re going, running or cycling. Just go on, if you want to back the clock shows the way to the starting point.

as it can be used as a fitness tracker, like a smartwatch and also as a navigation device as already described and does more than just a solid job in all areas. But you should not think that Fenix 5 is just a watch full of functions because it fulfills all tasks reliably and is extremely well thought out. All in all a really worthwhile purchase, even for fewer fitness enthusiasts. Because the tracking of data in everyday life is really fun with the Fenix 5 and the use as a smartwatch and for navigation are big pluses for the normal user.
